Why PGA Tour golfer Cameron Young almost had his mother caddie for him at Travelers Championship

Cameron Young was forced into a late caddie switch before the first round of the Travelers Championship on the PGA Tour.

Cameron Young nearly had his mother fill in as caddie during this week's PGA Tour event.

Young came into the signature Travelers Championship in Connecticut having finally found some form.

The 28-year-old produced a top five finish at the US Open and was among the betting favourites to contend this week.

But he was forced to find a replacement caddie at the last minute after his looper and former college roommate Kyle Sterbinksy came down with a sickness bug.

"Figured [I] would just give him an extra day to recover," Young said after carding a 5-under 65.

"I don't want what he has, and I don't want my kids to have what he has.

"I'm sure he could have come out here if his life depended on it."

Young told reporters his mother would have liked him to consider being hired for the day.

"In theory it would have been fun," he said.

But his father, David Young, was the better choice given he had spent years as a teaching professional at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in New Jersey.

Cameron's father retired a couple of years ago and also stepped in to caddie for his son during the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill a few years ago.

"He walks so many holes with me and knows the game so well that he can be an asset for me out there, where my mom is watching from a little bit farther away usually," Young said.

Young riding the momentum

Young began the season in poor form and by the time he teed it up at The Masters he had already missed five cuts from 10 starts.

He shot 71-79 at Augusta to also miss out on playing the weekend but has seen a steady improvement since.

Three top-10 finishes have followed and his performance at Oakmont last week saw him finish in the top five for the second event in a row.

Young thinks his form turned around at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio last month where he shared 25th place.

"T25 doesn't sound like much, but I think I shot 77 the first day and kind of just hung on from there, kept moving up," he said.

"There's been a lot of solid golf, and [it is] nice to see it kind of result in some good finishes."

Scottie Scheffler shares the lead after 18 holes of the Travelers Championship.

Rory McIlroy, Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark are also inside the top 10.

Clark confirmed he did trash the locker room at Oakmont after missing the cut at the third men's major of the year and 'deeply regrets' his actions.

Jordan Spieth was forced to withdraw after 13 holes with a shoulder injury, sparking fears ahead of The Open
